Confession: I’m A Bad Person
Today I find myself feeling very guilty. You see, I’m a bad person.
I mean, I didn’t really realize it until this morning, but I’ve seen the light. All this time I had been going around following the rules, obeying the law, paying my mortgage and property taxes – and income taxes, and sales taxes, and every other tax known to man in this country. Here I was raising my four kids, loving my wife, doing stuff in the community, and the whole thing was a fraud.
I’m a bad person. Not bad like murderer bad – but bad because… I can’t even say it. I’ll let Allison Benedikt over at Slate.com explain it.
You are a bad person if you send your children to private school. Not bad like murdererbad—but bad like ruining-one-of-our-nation’s-most-essential-institutions-in-order-to-get-what’s-best-for-your-kid bad. So, pretty bad.
In my case it’s even worse. My kids go to public school, but I would send them to private school in a heartbeat if I could afford it. I’m so ashamed.
Alright, enough of that. This Allison Benedikt person at Slate is a moron. She’s the bad person. The article itself is stupid, but her thinking is what makes her a bad person. Why? Because at the root of her argument is the idea that the “elites” who don’t send their kids to public school are better people who by their very presence improve the school system. Of course, Allison didn’t realize she was saying this, but she was.
She assumes the elite’s absence from the public school system is why the system is so bad in so many places around the country. Never once does it occur to her that it might be the teacher’s unions, or corrupt school district bureaucracy, or anything else. I live in Fairfax County, Virginia and we have one of the best school systems in the country. Coincidentally, Virginia is non-union. In her world, the elites are hurting the school system because they’re not in there doing their magic at the PTA, etc. The lowly plebes don’t do that kind of stuff, apparently.
She’s also a bad person because she writes at Slate, according to her own logic. She should give up her career and write here at The Right Sphere. For the children.
