Speaking Of Shady 501(c)(4) Non-Profits…
The IRS went after conservative groups in what can only be described as a massive abuse of power for political ends. The excuse being floated by Democrats is that the Citizen’s United case created a problem for the IRS because more people – gasp! – decided to exercise their freedom of speech.
So the “logic” according to them is that the IRS was overwhelmed and they cut corners to try to keep up. They say the IRS was only making sure these new 501(c)(4)s popping up weren’t really partisan operations in disguise. They had no other choice, they say. That’s a load of bunk. But if that’s the excuse they’re going with, the IRS could have easily headed this off by raising red flags on a very prominent 501(c)(4) that is very publicly ignoring that whole “non-partisan” thing that the IRS was supposed to be innocently investigating.
And when I say prominent, I mean really prominent. As in the organization that is currently controlling the Barack Obama twitter account which is reportedly still shared with the President of the United States, a Democrat.
That’s right. Organizing for Action, formerly Organizing for America, formerly Obama for America, is a 501(c)(4) organization that is supposed to be non-partisan. Did the IRS harass OFA?
Of course not.
They could strip their tax-exempt status today by simply going to the @BarackObama twitter page and reading through the timeline.
Why won’t they? The answer is obvious. Look at the bio of the twitter page:
This account is run by Organizing for Action staff. Tweets from the President are signed -bo.
That alone should be cause to deny tax-exempt status. But what happened was this: OFA was approved almost immediately.
*UPDATE: A reader informed me that 501(c)(4)s can be political but they can’t be primarily a political organization. So they’re supposed to be mostly, like more than 50%, “non-partisan.” In that light, my point about OFA still stands.
