Why are we even playing this game anymore?

There’s not going to be any “meaningful dialogue” in this country around gun control because one side, not ours, isn’t going to be honest about its intentions. The reality is that the vast majority of that side, not ours, doesn’t even really know what they’re asking for. It’s just a bunch of emotion without much rational thought behind it. The politicians, like Obama – who I am assuming is at least of average intelligence, will exploit the pain and anger for their agenda. And those of you who think Obama’s agenda has anything to do with saving children have yet to figure out who this guy is.

We’re not going to have a “meaningful dialogue” on gun control because that would entail acknowledging one thing that one side, not ours, will never ever admit to: Laws (and government) don’t have, and never will have, all the answers. This is the major barrier to having any real “meaningful dialogue” about guns in this country and because it would require the Left to give up its core principle, its fundamental premise, the dialogue is already over.

We’re just going through the motions.

A meaningful dialogue would be one where statistics are honestly offered to bolster one side or the other. Not going to happen.

A meaningful dialogue would be one where we get some admission that maybe, just maybe, the culture of abortion on demand, where the most innocent life imaginable can be snuffed out by a teenaged girl without any input from her parents, could be why life seems to be of little value to some people. It’s pretty tough to teach an entire population that life is precious when a sizable portion of that population is cool with killing a Down’s child before he/she ever sees the light of day.

A meaningful dialogue would include the millions and millions and millions of law abiding citizens who have owned firearms and never caused even a minor injury to anyone, let alone killed anyone.

A meaningful dialogue would demand from those looking to “do something” about gun violence a detailed plan to confiscate the guns already out there.

None of that will be discussed. What we’ll get, and what Obama knows we’ll get, is one side – not ours – exploiting the horrific deaths of over two dozen people in Connecticut to argue for something that they will never specify and cause further division in this country. Obama, being of at least average intelligence, doesn’t expect to get more gun control. All he wants is to have yet another issue with which to demonize conservatives. Anyone who thinks he really cares, hasn’t been paying attention.

We could have a “meaningful dialogue” in this country, but that really isn’t the Left’s goal.

This article is very clear there will be no meaningful dialogue and it’s equally clear the side writing it is the reason why. The author insists on making this a partisan issue. Everything is “left” and “right” for the author. The “right” will be demonized if they refuse to have a discussion, if they refuse to look at the statistics and refuse to look at the success and impact more control has had in other countries. Control does not mean abolish. Don’t pretend to be outraged when this happens again if you refuse to make any changes. It’s just part of our culture that this author is willing to accept – like drug overdoses. It happens. I am a conservative but love my family and their safety more than my party’s position. I and many others will bolt from an already weakened republican party over this. We’re outraged enough to actually make changes.

    Glen,

Who wrote that for you? Was it OFA or some other lefty organization?

I like the part where you pretend to be a conservative, too. Nice touch.

  3. Sean says:

Hi Glen! Remember how you said to look at the statistics? Yeah, that was funny. Please look at the statistics in Chicago, since you obviously have not has the chance to do so before you began preaching the leftist talking points. Let me know how gun control has helped the murder rate there, okay? Thanks, you silly boy!

    RB,
I wrote it all by myself. Who is responsible for all that bitterness and close mindedness necessary to write your article? I’m actually more middle conservative than far right. I believe abortion can be a medical procedure under extreme circumstances but a clinic on every corner is disgusting. I believe people should work for their money and handouts must have a short shelf life with drug testing required. No increased handouts because you have more babies. What other issues would you like to know so you can decide if i’m a liberal? Taxing the rich will only hurt small business and keep unemployment high. Obamacare will force small businesses to reduce the hours of employees. And reverend wright preaches more hate and racism than love and Jesus. I would have preferred Obama be Muslim than a member of that man’s church. I did not vote for a single democrat this past election but have voted for them on rare occassions in the past if i felt they were the better person. I do have my own opinions and views and do not fall in line and believe something simply because a party leader tells me what I should believe.

    Sean,
Thanks for the lack of statistics you provided. lol Nearly 10,000 Americans are murdered each year by guns. And that number is under half of those killed in the US each year. The most common cause of death by firearms is suicide. There were also nearly 600 accidental deaths in 2008, the last year for which there are statistics. There are over 30,000 people killed by guns each year in the US.
In 1996, 35 people were killed in the worst gun massacre in Australian history. But the next decade saw the firearm homicide rate fall by 59 per cent, and the firearm suicide rate fall by 65 per cent, without a corresponding rise in non-firearm deaths. They passed laws requiring a 28 day waiting period and banned semi-automatic weapons completely.
Gun related deaths are 20% higher in the US than any other western nation. In the last 10 years, more than 140,000 human beings were victims of gun-related homicide, another 208,000 turned guns on themselves.
Among the 23 countries of the OECD, 80 percent of all firearm deaths occur in the United States, 86 percent of women killed by firearms are U.S. women, and 87 percent of all children aged 0 to 14 killed by firearms are U.S. children.
There are 30,000 gun deaths in the U.S. every year, according to that same article. And here’s the most extraordinary line: “More Americans die in gun homicides and suicides in six months than have died in the last 25 years in every terrorist attack and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq combined.”
I’m not saying ban all guns – I’m saying get control. Make it more difficult to buy. Have them registered. Make safety lessons and waiting periods a requirement. If you refuse to even discuss making any kind of changes than you’re a selfish moron.

  6. Sean says:

“The most common cause of death by firearms is suicide.” And gun laws will do what, force them to choose cyanide? Suicide is the ultimate act of selfishness, and has no place in gun discussion.

“There were also nearly 600 accidental deaths in 2008, the last year for which there are statistics. There are over 30,000 people killed by guns each year in the US.” More people die in auto accidents, so ban cars too? Abortion kills more babies, ban abortion? By the way…ownership of cars and abortion are rights not included in the Bill of Rights.

We already have a waiting period in the U.S., how did that work for the killer, who STOLE the guns from his mom? In fact, there were a whole slew of guns laws broken by the killer. And what stopped the killer and forced him to turn the gun on himself? The cops arriving on scene with their weapons drawn. What stopped the Oregon Mall shooter? A man with a conceal carry permit, with a gun trained right on the shooter. Once the shooter saw that, he turned the gun on himself. Making it more difficult for the good guys to buy guns only emboldens the bad guys to do what they want, because they don’t need no stinking laws!

  7. Glen says:

I was simply providing all the facts – including those of suicide and accidental deaths. If you ever have a loved one take their life with a gun you may wish they had swallowed pills – which takes much longer and allows a better chance of rescue.

The comparison to auto accidents and abortions is just stupid. Autos serve a purpose well beyond killing. I’m all for banning abortion. I haven’t heard many reports of a woman aborting a whole classroom full of other people’s children – but if you can make that connection more power to you. Ban abortion. Ban anything and everything designed to kill innocents.

Ownership of guns for personal protection is not included in the bill of rights either. Accordingly, in a 1982 ruling, the Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit held: “Construing [the language of the Second Amendment] according to its plain meaning, it seems clear that the right to bear arms is inextricably connected to the preservation of a militia. We conclude that the right to keep and bear handguns is not guaranteed by the Second Amendment.” Unless you are on call from our military you are not covered by the constitution to own that handgun.

A study performed by the Southern Medical Journal in August 2009 found that 97% of all gun related deaths were suicide, domestic violence or accidental. 2% were gun owners defiending themselves from intruders.

Research has also shown that a gun kept in a home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household or a friend than an intruder.

Children in this country between the ages of 5 and 14 are 13 more like to be shot to death than children in other industrialized nations. Is that really the environment we want for our children? 2,889 minors have died from firearm incidents since 2007.

Civilians own an estimated 270 million guns in this country making it easier for an irrational person to obtain a gun and kill or injure innocent people and children.

Do you really think we shouldn’t even try to provide a safer place for our families and children? Do some research of all the facts with an open mind. Consider how rare you or anyone ever uses that gun to fend off an intruder; in contrast think of how often some nut case goes to a school, mall, movie theatre, etc. and starts killing. Most states do not have a waiting period. You can go to walmart, gun show, pawn shop and many other places and purchase all the guns and ammo you want on the spot.

  8. Glen says:

typo above – children between 5 & 14 or 13 TIMES more likely to be shot to death …

  9. Sean says:

As a matter of fact, I have had a loved one swallow a shotgun, so please don’t tell me how to feel about it. In fact, don’t EVER tell anyone how they should feel, got it?

I’ve had friends get shot as they were standing next to me…and we were at a nightclub in upstate NY, not Iraq. I have lived in gang infested neighborhoods (all I could afford in SoCal), with helicopters flying over my apartment @ 2 a.m., waking up to police announcing they are chasing an armed suspect and to stay inside. I don’t care what they’re carrying, I want MY choice of firearm!

You have heard of women drowning their children in cars, right? You have heard of parents throwing their children off of bridges, right? So is it because of the shock factor of guns? The pure numbers involved with guns? You know damn well if there was a trained administrator or teacher with a firearm, this doesn’t happen.

The Aurora, Co shooting and the Newtown shooting: what do they have in common? Both were in “gun-free zones”. The Aurora shooter picked that theater, not the one closest to his apartment, not the one farthest away, but the ONE theater in Aurora that is in a gun-free zone! Does anything else say “sitting ducks here” any more than that???

Oh yeah…that whole “Australia” thing? Ben-Peter Terpstra has an article on The Daily Caller titled “America, don’t repeat Australia’s gun control mistake”. I’d link it, but I’m not sure that’s proper etiquette, and I’d like to stay in the good graces of RB!

  10. Sean says:

BTW…I did have a family member that OD’d on drugs and alcohol in a suicide. Much, MUCH worse than swallowing a shotgun, since it was her grown children that had to decide to take her off life support. Please think before you make such a statement…you’d be better off not making that statement at all.
