Shorter White House: “What? Lead? Us? Surely, you jest.”
How awful is the Beltway Media? This awful.
About an hour ago – roughly 12:30pm EST – reporters said that a GOP source told them Obama was going to offer a scaled back fiscal cliff proposal today. Here’s CNN’s report:
In an effort to end an impasse over taxes, President Barack Obama plans to send Congress a scaled-back proposal Thursday to avoid the harshest impacts of the fiscal cliff, sources told CNN.
Within the hour, the White House pushed back saying Obama wasn’t going to offer a plan.
Do you understand what is going on here? The White House is actually trying to make sure people DON’T think they are going to lead by offering a fiscal cliff proposal. Obama is flying back from Hawaii, presumably to lead and get a deal done to avoid the fiscal cliff, and here they are denying that they’re going to do that. Why is he flying back to DC at all?
These are questions that the media should be asking right now. These are things that the media should be all over right now. The President of the United States is playing games and the media just sits there trying to figure out how it is the Republicans’ fault. They’re stumped, and silent, because they don’t know how to make Obama’s clear, and virtually stated, lack of leadership seem like something else.
A real media would be all “WTF is going here, guys?” But we don’t have a real media. We have a bunch of lapdogs who have taken it upon themselves to spin whatever happens into a pro-Obama narrative. It’s gotten to a point where Obama doesn’t even have to try anymore. He can basically say “I’m doing nothing.” and the media will figure out a way to make it sound good.
