After the election, I have seen many Republicans, conservatives, and libertarians express doubt about whether the right will be able to prevent the forces of American liberalism from “fundamentally transforming America”. It’s not hard to see why they feel that way after a hyperliberal president just managed to win reelection with an abysmal record in his first term.

Some on the American right have gone as far as to propose that the GOP should completely abandon its responsibility in D.C. and allow the Democrats to pass whatever legislation they desire. This, they argue, will cause the country to crash over the edge and into the abyss sooner rather than later. Since the Democrats would be in complete control of the crash, the American public would then turn to the GOP and conservatism in order to restore the country and fiscal sanity.

There are a number of flaws with this. For example, there is no guarantee that people would turn to conservatism after the U.S. has crashed into the abbyss. If that’s the case, conservatism would be the only game in town in places like Greece and Spain.

Furthermore, it would require a complete abdication of responsibility by the GOP. That in itself is simply unacceptable behavior by a party that wants to strenghten its credentials as party ready to govern in place of the Democrats and would cause immense damage to the GOP brand.

So while it might be tempting to throw its hands up in the air, it should think twice before doing so.
