If Americans only take away one thing from this election cycle, it should be that Barack Obama, Joe Biden, and the rest of the Democratic Party aren’t interested in addressing serious problems with serious solutions. The ‘Big Bird’ talking point is not an isolated incident of a campaign that is trying to divert attention from the fact that they are plummeting in the polls. It is just another instance of a campaign that is trying to draw attention to anything but their miserable record and their lack of ideas.

Want to talk about how to create a fairer tax code by closing loopholes and lowering rates? Democrats would rather talk about Governor Romney’ tax returns.

Want to talk about how to save Medicare? Democrats say that Republicans are out to end Medicare and create ads showing a Paul Ryan look-a-like pushing grandma off the cliff.

Want to talk about how the Obama administration’s incompetent foreign policy have destroyed all progress that was made in Iraq and Afghanistan? Biden replies by shouting “Osama Bin Laden is dead and GM is alive!”

In the European Union the political elite, as foolish as they might be, at least had a vision about an “ever closer union”. In America, the Democrats don’t seem to have any vision at home or abroad. Well, at least not one that stretches beyond “tax the rich capitalist pigs and see what happens”.

No one can deny that the Republican Party has contributed to pulling America into the fiscal hole in which it now resides. However, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan represent a Republican Party that actually is prepared to make tough choices in order to crawl up from the hole. The Democrats counter by calling them liars while they plan to keep digging.

Programs like Medicare and Social Security are in need of reform and a growing American economy if they are going to be there for future generations. While I’m not sure that Romney and Ryan will succeed in enacting reform an economic growth, I’m convinced that they will try.

Because that is what serious politicians do.
