This is why Paul Ryan is one of the best spokesmen for conservatism in the country right now. He gets it.

“We should not be measuring the progress of our social programs, like food stamps, based upon how many people receive them, but by how many people we transition off of them into lives of self-sufficiency & jobs & upward mobility.”

  1. AApostrophe says:

Without strong economic growth “people miss their potential.” Well worded, and a strong message that should be the message carried forward. The idea of dependency shouldn’t be characterized strictly by the pecuniary difference in taxes paid and government benefits received. I have some problems with the way Governor Romney phrased his argument (extremely important caveat being that he was in a private event speaking off the cuff); however, the basic message is one of independence. Not independence in a lofty, philosophical sense. Independence in a practical, everyday sense; the exact antithesis to the Democratic worldview of The Life of Julia.

Good find with this exchange. Rep. Ryan has always been articulate when describing his optimism in what people can achieve on their own in a strong and free economy. I hope they push with this message all the way through to November.
