So Mitt Romney made a birth certificate joke while campaigning in Michigan today. As one would expect, the Obama Campaign and the media have jumped all over it as Romney embracing ‘birtherism.’ Here’s the quote:

Speaking about his Michigan roots, he said, “No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised.”

The joke was received with hearty applause by the audience. Still, it was an awkward moment for the candidate to play on the birther conspiracies that have plagued Barack Obama since he ran for president in 2008, even after the president released his “long-form” birth certificate in 2011.

The Obama campaign quickly responded, with spokesman Ben LaBolt saying that Romney was embracing the most extreme elements in the conservative movement.

Never mind that Romney has rejected that ridiculous school of thought on many occasions, this will be the story now.

Since jokes about birth certificates are clearly off limits, I thought the Obama Campaign and the media would also like to take issue with any and all candidates who make birth certificate jokes. Like this one:

Look, would I have made the joke Romney made? No chance. I wouldn’t have done that because it distracts from issues that President Obama can’t win on. Namely 42 straight months of unemployment over 8%, a $16T debt, and $1T+ deficits. That joke now allows the Obama Campaign to talk about something other than the miserable economy that they clearly own.

But I am not going to get all flustered over Mitt Romney joking about something President Obama jokes about himself. Especially when that same Obama Campaign has no issue running with the theme of Mitt Romney being a ‘murdering felon.’ Spare me.
