In their latest attempt to carry water for the Democratic Party, Buzzfeed is trying to tie Maryland Republican Congressman Bartlett to Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin for saying something completely different and completely acceptable. Here’s the apparently offending quote:

“Oh, life of the mother – exception of life of the mother, rape and incest. Yeah, I’ve always — that’s a mantra, you know, I’ve said it so often it just spills out,” he said. “If you really — there are very few pregnancies as a result of rape, fortunately, and incest — compared to the usual abortion, what is the percentage of abortions for rape? It is tiny. It is a tiny, tiny percentage.

Read the emphasized section above again. What is wrong with that statement? Absolutely nothing. It is factual and true: very few of the abortions performed are a result of rape, which Bartlett believes is an exception to his opinion that abortion is wrong.

Let me introduce Buzzfeed to some easy math: rape pregnancies divided by regular pregnancies equals a small number. Further, rape abortions divided by all other abortions also equals a small number. This is simple stuff. Even I understand this and I suck at math.

This isn’t even a newsworthy story. It’s not worth anyone’s time to go trying to tie this guy saying something reasonable to Akin, but here we are. No doubt Buzzfeed was hoping against hope it could break the next big electoral scandal. Instead they just embarrassed themselves.
