So Mitt Romney said he was looking forward to returning the bust of Winston Churchill to the White House. If you recall, it had been loaned to the White House and Obama sent it back. Romney, visiting the UK, said he would bring it back. Everyone had a few laughs at the jab and all went back to normal.

But then, the White House got involved. White House spokesman, Dan Pfeiffer, wrote on the White House website that the bust had never left the White House.

Now, normally we wouldn’t address a rumor that’s so patently false, but just this morning the Washington Post’s Charles Krauthammer repeated this ridiculous claim in his column.  He said President Obama “started his Presidency by returning to the British Embassy the bust of Winston Churchill that had graced the Oval Office.”

This is 100% false. The bust still in the White House. In the Residence. Outside the Treaty Room.

That settles it, right?

Wrong.

You see, the claim is not 100% false. It’s actually true. Says who? Why Media Matters, of course.

A British Embassy spokesman said: “The bust of Sir Winston Churchill by Sir Jacob Epstein was uniquely lent to a foreign head of state, President George W Bush, from the Government Art Collection in the wake of 9/11 as a signal of the strong transatlantic relationship.

“It was lent for the first term of office of President Bush. When the President was elected for his second and final term, the loan was extended until January 2009.

“The new President has decided not to continue this loan and the bust has now been returned. It is on display at the Ambassador’s Residence.

Emphasis mine.

So, who’s lying? Obviously, the bust did leave the White House, went on display at the Ambassador’s Residence, and then made its way back to the White House.

Oh, Team Obama. Why must you lie so much?

UPDATE: Oh, there’s more.

Diplomats were at first reluctant to discuss the whereabouts of the Churchill bronze, after its ejection from the seat of American power. But the British Embassy in Washington has now confirmed that it sits in the palatial residence of ambassador Sir Nigel Sheinwald, just down the road from Vice President Joe Biden’s official residence. It is not clear whether the ambassador plans to keep it in Washington or send it back to London.

Poor Team Obama. Can’t keep the lies straight.

UPDATE #2: There’s been some debate on what Pfeiffer said. In order to clear up what he said in the White House post linked above, let’s look at how he tweeted it:

You see that? He said it was a “false rumor that POTUS gave back” the bust. Clearly, since the bust was in the Ambassador’s house, POTUS did, in fact, give it back. Otherwise, words have no meaning.

UPDATE #3 Jake Tapper investigated and came up with what happened. Read the whole thing. It turns out there are two busts! BUT, this is key, the one Romney was talking about? It’s still not in the White House. So Dan Pfeiffer did, in fact, lie.

BUSTED.

So, is White House curator William Allman lying?

“Some Britons took offense when Winston Churchill’s bust was replaced with King’s. But the decision to return the Churchill bust to the British – it had been presented by former Prime Minister Tony Blair to Bush on loan – had been made before Obama even arrived.

“It was already scheduled to go back,” Allman said.”

Give them a break. There’s probably *some* bust there and you know how those things all look alike.

The pathological lying is a disorder born of their contempt for the intelligence of others. It must be so because I said so, is seeded in narcissitic personality disorder..which the left shares as a collective diagnosis..how quaint that their collective idealogy extends to their mental disorder diagnosis.

My Grandpa once told me that a true alchoholic will steal your wallet and then stay around to help you look for it. That’s what we’re dealing with here.

That’s big of the Governor to pledge to take back something that doesn’t belong to us. “Fetch me that bust of Sir Winston, you silly little Brits, you!”

  10. The point is not what CITY it’s in, it’s that the bust was returned from OUR possession of it as a gift, back to the British, which is a slap in the face. The White House says it didn’t happen, and RB proves IT DID.

Your assertion that you have definitive proof is overstated. What you have is a year-old Media Matters story. They could have gotten it wrong. I’m guessing you have disagreed with them before… so why total confidence now?

    Here’s another source, more recent.

I’m guessing the White House posted an older photo because it has the British Prime Minister in it, which brings the story full circle.

What should be noted is that Obama did not extend the loan of the Bust because of some possible personal reasons rumored to have happened in Africa to his father and grandfather when Kenya was seeking its independence. It could be reason for Obama’s animosity against Captialism and “American” Colonialism

Are you people listening to what you’re saying? Seriously?
The official unemployment rate is 8.1%. In 2003 the unemployment rate was right around 5%. and all anyone could talk about was how bad the economy was performing.
And a bit of plaster is what everyone is talking about now.
What part of “focus” do you not get?

“…and here’s my opponent, once again attempting to draw attention away from his abysmal performance in his current office with frivolous, petty distractions that pale in comparison to the hot mess this glorified student teacher has gone out of his way to incubate and nurture, that mess being the economic engine of this great nation. I call on the President to appear before the American people and explain to them in detail just exactly what he has accomplished and why they should re-elect him President of the United States. ” Mitt Romney, post-getting his balls back.

  19. wesmorgan1 says:

As I understand it, the original loan was for the duration of President Bush’s time in office. If that’s true, then it wasn’t President Obama’s to keep, or even his place to ask for the loan to be continued…right? If anything, it would be up to the British to offer a continued loan, yes?
