Ohio Senator Rob Portman, considered a leading man for Vice President on the GOP ticket, delivers this week’s Republican address. Aside from the scathing attacks on President Obama’s record, Portman also talks convincingly of the GOP’s alternative ideas and policies to right the American economy without increasing the debt, deficit, or government.

But this address is a bit more than routine in my eyes. As the deadline for Romney to make his VP selection approaches, this is another audition for Portman, who seems to check all the boxes needed and wanted in a veep pick. If this address is indeed part of the Senator’s audition, he nailed it, proving he can make a convincing case against Barack Obama and promote Republican ideas just as well.

Key quote: “Instead of lifting the burden on job creators, the President is once again calling for a massive tax increase on nearly 1 million small businesses that employ tens of millions of Americans. Raising taxes on job creators during a jobs shortage makes about as much sense as cutting off the water supply during a drought.”
