This May Be The Most Ridiculous Thing I’ve Ever Seen
Kudos to The Right Scoop for posting this very disturbing story of a teacher and a student having a discussion regarding President Obama and Mitt Romney on the subject of bullying. The conversation turned ugly very quickly:
This teacher is so far out of line I don’t know what to say. She is using her position of authority to stifle any discussion at all. She wants the topic to be that Mitt Romney is a bully and nothing else. If she chooses to have a discussion like this in her classroom, she has to allow the very legitimate point that President Obama admitted to pushing a girl in his own book. Now, if she wanted to make the point that they are different examples because of the age difference? Fine. Different because of circumstance? Fine. But she didn’t.
Her entire objective was to present a one-sided argument against Mitt Romney. She even made the case that the student could be arrested for voicing his opinion on the subject.
What is perhaps even more disturbing is that this woman is a social studies teacher who is obviously ignorant of the subject she is assigned to teach. Further, if you listened to the video, it is clear that this teacher is the one that escalated the incident. She began yelling and berating the student that brought up an opposing viewpoint. Nothing he said about President Obama was even disrespectful. He made a counter-argument and she went ballistic and even made outrageous claims that would be laughable if they weren’t such an indictment of her stupidity and political bias.
This woman has no place in the classroom. She is incapable of conducting a impartial class discussion and is woefully clueless about the subject she teaches. I think political discussion should be encouraged in our classrooms. However, they should only be conducted by those capable. This woman is not, and she has no business in the classroom.
UPDATE: The North Rowan teacher involved in this incident has been suspended. From The Salisbury Post:
Rowan-Salisbury Schools officials suspended a North Rowan High School teacher Monday while investigating an incident caught on camera where the teacher told a student he could be arrested for speaking ill of President Barack Obama.
In a nearly 10-minute YouTube video shot by a student in the classroom, Tanya Dixon-Neely, a social studies teacher, told students criticism of the president could lead to jail time.
“Do you realize that people were arrested for saying things bad about Bush?” she said of former President Bush. “Do you realize you are not supposed to slander the president?”
Dixon-Neely has been suspended with pay, according to Rowan-Salisbury School System Spokeswoman Rita Foil.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens with this one.
