Rick Santorum, the surprise candidate of 2012 is putting the brakes on his 2012 bid to replace President Obama and effectively conceding the race to Mitt Romney:

NBC News has confirmed that Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum will suspend his campaign for the nomination. The announcement, expected shortly at an event in Gettysburg, Pa., follows a recent hospitalization for his 3-year-old daughter who suffers from the chromosomal defect Trisomy 18.

A senior source in the Mitt Romney camp confirms to NBC News that the front-runner received a call from Santorum today.

Of course, the race was all but finished already, but this puts a period at the end of a tumultuous campaign season. It will be Mitt Romney against Barack Obama in November.

As Santorum says, game on.

I received a very respectful email from the Santorum campaign with the announcement. Say what you will but Senator Santorum is a class act and I’m pleased to see him exit graciously. God bless him, his family and especially Bella.

Equally as classy was Mitt Romney’s statement, “Senator Santorum is an able and worthy competitor, and I congratulate him on the campaign he ran. He has proven himself to be an important voice in our party and in the nation. We both recognize that what is most important is putting the failures of the last three years behind us and setting America back on the path to prosperity.”
