Olympia Snowe is Retiring and GOP’s Chances to Retain Her Seat Look Grim

Well, this sin’t good news for the GOP, since we’re hoping to take the Senate this year:
“@theFix: Maine Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe is not running for re-election, according to 2 source familiar with decision. HUGE news.”
As we all know, Maine is actually a pretty heavily blue state. It’s a miracle we have two moderate Republicans elected to the Senate from there. Now, the chances of maintaining her seat look grim unless another credible Republican jumps in the race.
Why? Scott D’Ambiose, the only other declared GOP candidate, is apparently coo-coo:
D’Amboise: Obama is Not a Christian
One of Snowe’s Republican Primary challengers, Scott D’Amboise, revealed in an interview with a writer for former Bush aide David Frum’s blog FrumForum that he doesn’t believe President Obama is a Christan.
The piece quotes D’amboise as saying “The President, he says he is Christian but yet he’s exercises a lot of Muslim faith too. Me personally, I’m a Christian conservative. I don’t hold any malice to anybody, whether they are Muslim, or Jewish, or Catholic, or anything else. I just believe that he needs to come forward with his views a little bit clearer.”
Asked if he believed Obama is a secret muslim, D’Amboise apparently responded “I don’t know if he is or isn’t, but I don’t believe he’s a Christian.”
If we think a guy like that can win in a blue state like Maine, we are delusional. The GOP needs a new candidate, and quick. The filing deadline for the primary is March 15th. Are there any potential saviors here, or is this a lost cause?

This is sad not just for the GOP in general, but for the consiberal center. Olympia Snowe is a class act, so to speak, a Republican in the true mold. (Perhaps we can tempt her to VP?)
Olympia Snowe was a republican? I never would have guessed considering how often she sided with the socialist left.
[...] the news that Senator Olympia Snowe is not going to seek re-election, Republicans will have a harder time [...]
James: Olympia Snowe is the kind of Republican that tradition demands, prior to the hijacking of the party by the extreme right. She represents more than 1/2 of the party, statistically–it’s just the quite (some would say too quiet) segment of the party. Olympia Snowe understand governing and is guided by ideology rather than ruled by it.
