Marco Rubio’s Religious Background: It’s A Trap!

So BuzzFeed came out with what they’re trying to pretend is a huge story.
In the compelling personal narrative that has helped propel Florida Senator Marco Rubio to national political stardom, one chapter has gone completely untold: Rubio spent his childhood as a faithful Mormon.
ZOMG! A Mormon! SCANDALOUS!
Yawn.
Why does this matter? It doesn’t, but that’s not stopping them from trying really hard to make it a thing.
The revelation adds a new dimension to Rubio’s already-nuanced religious history—and could complicate his political future at a time when many Republicans see him as the odds-on favorite for the 2012 vice presidential nod. Vice presidential candidates are traditionally chosen to provide ethnic and religious balance to a ticket. Mitt Romney’s Mormonism and Rubio’s Catholic faith would already mean the first two members of minority traditions on a Republican ticket in American history. Rubio’s Mormon roots could further complicate that calculation.
Unadulterated bullsh*t.
So what’s really going on here? I mean besides the fact that Rubio is a rock star and the Left is desperate to diminish his stature as a leading voice in the conservative movement, of course.
Here’s what I think. This story is a trap. It’s meant to anger conservatives and get them talking about someone else’s religious past: Obama’s. This way the narrative can stay in the “right wing nutjobs think Obama is Muslim” arena versus keeping focus on Obama’s disastrous record on the economy and pretty much everything else.
We know BuzzFeed’s new editor in chief is the former Journolister, Ben Smith. We know, thanks to the Daily Caller, that Ben was a Media Matters go to guy who would basically write anything they threw at him:
“Ben Smith [formerly of Politico, now at BuzzFeed.com] will take stories and write what you want him to write,” explained the former employee, whose account was confirmed by other sources. Staffers at Media Matters “knew they could dump stuff to Ben Smith, they knew they could dump it at Plum Line [Greg Sargent’s Washington Post blog], so that’s where they sent it.”
Did Media Matters provide BuzzFeed with the sources for their “big scoop?” Can’t say for sure. Either way, it fits the pattern. The Left, and there’s no doubt Ben Smith leans Left, needs the focus to be on anything but Obama’s record. So what better way to get both sides of the political spectrum to start a “war” over who has the “sketchier” religious background?
Obama and his Leftist pals in the media kept the “birther” issue alive well after the election in order to keep both sides talking about nonsense. The birth control issue was brought up out of nowhere by George Stephanopoulos and now it’s a major issue in the campaign.
This “scoop” about Rubio is a trap. Don’t fall for it.
