You may remember Rick Lazio. In 2010 he was considered the establishment and favored candidate for Governor of New York in the Republican primary. However, he was eventually defeated by Carl Paladino and his notorious baseball bat, and Lazio gracefully dropped into the background.

But with Sen. Gillibrand up for reelection again in 2012, a lot of people are left wondering what Republican could be lining up to challenge her. Thanks to the eagle eye of Twitter-friend Matthew Newman, however, it appears Lazio may be gearing up the challenge the Senator – and all the evidence you need is a simple Google search.

A search for “Lazio” in Google brings up the first result of Lazio’s former campaign website, Lazio.com with the title of “Lazio, Rick for US Senate.” But, when you click the link, all you get is the letter of concession left by Lazio after the GOP gubernatorial primary. Puzzling, but if there was any indication a Lazio may be mulling a bid, this is it.

I believe Lazio would make a great candidate to face Gillibrand, so I really hop he runs. He would make a great Senator, and a conservative one at that.

Matthew Newman notes over at Old Line Elephant that is isn’t the first time Lazio has run for Senate, he took over in place of Giuliani in 2000 against Clinton when the former was diagnosed with prostate cancer. This may explain the title on web page, but why use something for the title of your site that happened 11 years ago? Right now Lazio seems to be the strongest contender to take on Gillibrand, but I’d happily be proven wrong.

    1. Do you remember 2000 when he ran against Hillary? Disaster.
    2. There is no one else who CAN run in New York.
    3. The New York GOP, right now, are as dead as dinosaurs.

    Next!

  2. Lazio first ran for this very seat in 2000, being the one ready to step up and face Hillary Clinton when Rudy Giuliani was diagnosed with prostrate cancer and dropped out. I certainly hope that he runs, he’d be a solid candidate.

He’s such a loser. Isn’t there a candidate who could win?

Do we actually have a conservative in this state who can present a coherent vision that would appeal to New Yorkers?

Why has Peter King not run for something statewide?

Lazio should run for the seat. He could do it now or 2018 when I think Gillibrand will be really vulnerable. For now she has gays, 9/11 responders and minorities on her side so Rick better find a good strategy fast! But I would love to see him as Senator!
