In a speech made today, the President spoke about an energy policy that will reduce the import of foreign oil into our nation by a amount of one-third by 2020. He claims this is going to help the country lose its dependency on foreign oil. As Brandon Kiser points out on this site; with the moratorium on drilling that the President has put on this country, the reduction in imports may reduce our dependence slightly in the short term, but what it will truly do is raise the prices even more than what we are seeing now. This is simple supply and demand economics. As the supply decreases and demand stays the same for the time being, prices will increase. Some may think the president is stupid, claim economic idiocy in the part of the current administration, and I used to be one of them, but I have corssed the line and now believe that the president is extremely smart, and thinks the rest of us below his amazing amount of intellect.

Think about what the president is for and against. He is all about the “greening” of this country. The President wants to push everyone in this country into an alternative energy source, be it electric vehicles, solar powered houses, or wind-turned turbines. At current gas prices, the increased cost of a hybrid- or electric-engined car over a traditional combustion engine does not equal the amount of savings that you achieve through the added gas mileage, but if gas hits a 5 dollar mark, the cost efficiency of the alternative engine becomes economically viable. Currently there is only 4% of America that is willing to pay a high premium for alternative energy, and only 20% willing to pay even 10% more than the standard engine. So if it proves economically intelligent due to higher gas prices, this number is sure to increase, basically fircing people to be green through executive order and policy.

The president may be claiming that he is all for decreasing our need of foreign oil, and he may be doing something that to some look like he is decreasing our need of it, all he is doing is decreasing the supply to push people to either pay more, or use alternative energy. And you know the company that achieves a lot of monetary success if people and businesses are forced into using alternative energy more. DING! DING! DING! You get a prize if you guessed the most recent huge corporation to pay no taxes. You know, the one whose CEO is on the Obama board for Economic Recovery. That is right folks: General Electric. Seems that Jeffrey Immelt’s best idea for economic recovery is to have Executive Orders and regulations push the public to use your product.

Now you may think I am just being a huge Alex Jones loving, conspiracy nut job, but the facts are clear, less supply with equal demand equals higher cost. But then again if you believe a President who is making fun of campaign slogans such as “Drill, Baby, Drill” while standing in front of a huge “Winning the Future” backdrop, I have a wind turbine to sell you in Brooklyn.

I dislike doing what I’m just about to do, but someone, somewhere has got to make a stand. This error has just gone too far, has penetrated too deep into our written discourse, and must stop now.

The noun you want is “populace.” It’s a fancy-pants synonym for “people” or “inhabitants.”

“Populous” is an adjective, and it means, unsurprisingly, “filled with people.”

If you — and the fourteen bazillion other writers who have gotten this wrong in my presence in the past few years — really can’t keep the two straight, you could always just say “people.” It’s a perfectly servicable English word. If you prefer one syllable, “folks” would do.

EDITOR: Sorry, Kathy. Thanks for the heads up. It’s fixed.

Thanks Kathy, I look at any comment like this as a learning experience. Sorry about my misuse of the word.
