In a recently released video, Texas College Republicans Chairman Charlie McCaslin is shown giving an apparently drunk endorsement of College Republican National Committee Committee Chairman candidate Alex Schriver. In the video, McCaslin talks about what can only be described as sexual escapade with two girls in the room and then goes on to endorse Schriver before declaring that Schriver’s opponents are “nerds and fags.”

Soon afterward, candidate Schriver toasts back in appreciation of the drunken, lewd statement.

Schriver, Chairman of the College Republican Federation of Alabama, and his “Move CRNC Forward” team are running against Jonathan Snyder, Chairman of the Ohio College Republican Federation, and “InnovateCRNC” for control of the committee. It’s likely Snyder and his group were the focus of these attacks and they have since released this video:

In response to the video, candidate Snyder said he “was shocked by the actions of Alex Schriver, and believes he lacks the necessary leadership and character to head the College Republican National Committee” and calls for his resignation.

Schriver’s rebuttal was that McCaslin’s toast was not in support “of the more than just kind remarks about him.” Schriver also says he “regrets putting the situation, and that the video could be a distraction and an embarrassment in the near future,” and offers up a “sincere apology.”

It’s hard to make a judgement call here. For one, the most damning things said in the video were stated by Charlie McCaslin, not Schriver. Further, they were out, I’m assuming privately, having a good time. All are above the age of 21, so I don’t see how drinking could be a problem either. However, when a candidate for a national office within the larger GOP hears disparaging words (especially homophobic ones) being thrown at their opponent, toasting back at the man doing the insulting is not becoming of a CRNC chairman.

Should Schriver resign? I don’t think so. It seems he realized he did the wrong thing and apologized. However, that does not mean the incident should not be taken into account during the race for CRNC chair.

Disclosure: I’m a member of the Shawnee State University College Republicans, which is in Ohio and under the OCRF, which Jonathan Snyder chairs. I’ve never met Snyder and do not know him.

UPDATE: Here’s the full, unedited video of the incident. Not much more to be seen really, but it by no means makes any of this better. interestingly, someone says the tape is “going to go viral.” Did McCaslin and Schriver know they were on tape… but said what was said anyway?

Alex Schriver is a stand-up individual, and though this supporter may have gotten a bit too enthusiastic, the comments made don’t reflect the views of Schriver himself.

I’ve met Schriver many times and he is definitely the guy to move the CRNC forward. I encourage anyone who questions his character based on this video to talk to Alex personally, as they will quickly realize that he is nothing but an easy going guy with a clear vision to make the CRNC the best it can possibly be.

My college chapter (and state delegation) have wholeheartedly endorsed him, and I’d be happy to discuss why we chose him over anyone else.

  2. @hunter,

I was in no way-one attacking Schriver as an individual, but I do judge a man by the company he keeps. Toasting McCaslin right after he calls his opponent “nerds and fags” isn’t becoming of a CRNC chair in my opinion.

I don’t deny Schriver’s good will, but it’s what’s on the tape that counts here.

    Umm, Schriver is done. Period.

  5. Texas CR says:

The video is extensively edited. Schriver did NOT toast McCaslin “right after” he made a drunken, derogatory statement. While it might be politically expedient for CR leaders from other states to make this issue bigger than it would normally be if there wasn’t a CRNC race going on, this is something that should be handled in Texas, by Texans.

  6. Unless you can give me the video that isn’t “extensively edited,” your claim can only be taken with a huge grain of salt.

And even if Schriver didn’t toast McCaslin right afterward, he did nonetheless. And that’s shameful.

And no, this goes beyond Texas when a man running for CRNC chair is doing the toasting to a man who calls his opponents derogatory terms. Again, shameful.

In response to Brandon Kaisers comment “I do judge a man by the company he keeps”

This is a national race for crnc chair in which you are elected by state chairs. Charlie is the state chair of one of the biggest states in the country so naturally Alex wanted his endorsement.

Your comment about “the company he keeps” makes no since seeing as Snyder was in Texas that weekend doing EVERYTHING he could to get Charlies endorsement.

Had Charlie endorsed Snyder that day, he would of been sitting right next to him at that dinner and this which situation would of been reversed.

If you are a journalist, and claiming you are objective, then you know that judging Alex’s character by “the company he keeps” was an unfair statement and biased considering the circumstances.

Do you think for one second that Snyder would of stood up from that dinner, walked out, and turned down the endorsement of the Texas College Republican Federation??? NO WAY!

  8. Texas CR says:

Brandon, there were well over 20 people in that room. Anyone who was there will tell you that Schriver was uncomfortable the whole time, and that the timeline presented in the short, 1 minute video is far from representative of what ACTUALLY happened.

Those of us in Texas do not appreciate having this situation – which should be handled in Texas, by Texans – being made infinitely worse/played out on a national scale just so we can be used as campaign fodder. When the dust settles and Snyder’s campaign moves on (I give it about a week), it will be our PR nightmare to deal with. Alone.

  10. JonRI says:

The video is not highly edited at all. In fact the campaign has released the full unedited tape that was originally posted by these folks themselves to the Texas College Republicans Facebook. I believe the unedited tape is even more damning, just longer to watch.

    To: Arwee
You cannot say that Jonathon would have done the samething. I’m guessing you’ve never met him either. All these people who say “meet Alex and you’ll know he’s not like this” the shoe goes on the other foot. Jonathon is a classy man who would never try to fit in by toasting a speech with those words in it.

I have heard nothing but good things come from Jonathon’s mouth about Alex and his supporters. People make mistakes, but they own up it, and take the ACTIONS just like Charlie did, for he has resigned today.

Texas CR: I have a feeling your name is Melanie, but regardless Texas was dealt with by Texas. Don’t play the pity card because this happened in your state. There was national element that was sitting next to the “texas” element. The problem all stemmed from the fool who 1. took the video and 2. the fool who posted the video ON FACEBOOK! I don’t if you know what Facebook is, but it’s kind of a big deal, you know, there’s even a movie about it!

In a 24/7 media cycle putting anything online, even this post, is PUBLIC. Don’t blame the InnovateCRNC team for “releasing” it, cause it was already released, by a TEXAS CR!

And we wonder why people DON’T want to get involved with college republicans…

  12. Conjecture won’t save Schriver, Arwee. He toasted a man after he insulted, disparagingly, his opponents.

I’m not a journalist. I’m a conservative blogger and I call it like I see it. From my perspective, the company Schriver not only kept, but toasted to says a lot about him.

  13. He was uncomfortable? Dandy. But he still didn’t repudiate or speak back against the insults directed at a fellow CR and that says a lot.

This is not a Texas problem alone, so please don’t fool yourself by trying to make this a smaller issue. When your chairman endorsed a NATIONAL candidate then hatefully remarked against another candidate, it became a national issue, plain and simple. So you Texans can try and handle it, but the words are on tape.
